The old man in the newspaper kiosk smiled and reached out to grab my hand, closing it around the 20 euro note that I had been holding on to on the way over and that had warmed up to my body temperature. “Lady”, he said in a consoling tone of voice, “There is more in the world to worry about than not having the correct change. I’ve got all the change I need. That’s one thing you can take your mind off.”

a simple story

It’s a simple story told in an uncomplicated way. It’s not an “event” film. No one dies (except for in a flashback).

Very cute, the description of tomorrow night’s movie at St. Georges bookshop, which organizes the best movie nights I’ve never been to. My subscription to their newsletter has the sole purpose of reminding me twice a week of the fact that it is much better to stay at home and watch crappy downloaded movies which always, always turn out to be dubbed in Spanish and have no subtitles.

I wish I could finish this email without revealing the title of the film because it’s a wholly inappropriate one and it is by far the worst
aspect of the film. It’s called YOU CAN COUNT ON ME (2000).

From space, astronauts can see people making love as a tiny speck of light. Not light exactly, but a glow that could be confused for light — a coital radiance that takes generations to pour like honey through the darkness to the astronaut’s eyes.

So okay, over the past two years or so my interest in reading has been limited to glancing over magazines and the typical quick I-need-to-hold-on-to-something read on the toilet. I’m at least six Murakami’s behind (click) and browsing the web is tainted with the constant fear of accidentally finding the final Harry Potter spoiler.

But lately, I’ve been enjoying a read again. I’m years behind this one, too. I got suspicious when the whole world cried this novel shows more than a hint of genius. I got briefly interested after, but reconsidered when the title appeared on my mothers’ book club reading list. And then it kind of just fell into my hands and I starting reading and I laughed until my eyes were wet.

Such clever language play. Such subtle, and such dark irony.

One third of the book feels like a brilliant road trip movie with a touch of Borat, which it actually is, one third is an amusing metastory, the other third tells a partly incomprensible, partly beautiful traditional Jewish tale.

But let’s let our main character speak for himself…

My legal name is Alexander Perchov, but all of my friends dub me Alex because this is much more flaccid to utter. That is Father retrieving his fist from the right side of my face. Father is a first-rate puncher.

This is Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. She is Grandfather’s Seeing Eye bitch. Father purchased her for him not because he believes Grandfather is blind, but because a Seeing Eye bitch is also a good thing for people who pine for the opposite of loneliness. In truth, Father did not purchase her at all but merely retrieved her from the home for forgetful dogs. Because of this, she is not a real Seeing Eye bitch and is also mentally deranged. Most of all, she relishes when I sing to her her most beloved song, “Billie Jean ” by Michael Jackson.

For me, America is a first-rate place. Most of all, I am beloved of American movies, muscular cars and hip-hop music. I also dig Negroes. Most of all, Michael Jackson. He is a first-rate dancer, just like me. Many girls want to be carnal with me because I’m such a premium dancer.

- Oh, and in the movie it is nice to see Elijah Wood and know for sure that he is not wearing pantyhose.

I used to be with ‘it.’ Then they changed what ‘it’ was. Now what I’m with isn’t ‘it’ and what’s ‘it’ seems weird and scary to me. It’ll happen to you.

Steven Tyler = Ebay vintage

I was looking for something nice to put up my walls on Ebay the other day. Nothing too fancy, nothing too shiny. I have actually been trying to get my hands on one of these ugly babies or this one by the lovely Matt Terich. All without success.

What I did stumble across was this “original vintage” Aerosmith poster. The owner described it as “worn and torn” yet “in acceptable condition“. He further pointed out that Steven Styler showed on the poster, along with the actual full band name “Aerosmith, along the bottom“.

I felt the urge to help him approve his product description a little to avoid negative reactions from buyers. Because let’s call a cow a cow: this is “Half a poster.” Nothing more. Nothing less.

Now the real question is: can you also buy the other half and is THAT in acceptable condition? Because then we really might put something together here.
